The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra is one of the most celebrated and enduring big bands in jazz history, maintaining a remarkable Monday night residency at the Village Vanguard since February 7, 1966.
The orchestra began as the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, co-led by trumpeter and composer Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis. What started as a casual gathering of top New York studio musicians seeking a creative outlet quickly evolved into one of the most influential ensembles in modern big band jazz. The band’s book featured Jones’s innovative compositions and arrangements, which pushed the boundaries of big band writing with their harmonic sophistication and rhythmic complexity.
When Thad Jones departed in 1979 to lead the Danish Radio Big Band, the ensemble continued as the Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. Lewis maintained the band’s high standards and Monday night tradition until his death in 1990. The musicians then chose to carry on as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, honoring both the club that had been their home and the legacy of their founders.
Over nearly six decades, the orchestra has served as a proving ground for generations of jazz musicians, with its alumni representing a who’s who of modern jazz. The band has won multiple Grammy Awards and continues to perform new works alongside the classic Thad Jones arrangements that remain central to its repertoire. Composers and arrangers who have contributed to expanding the band’s book include Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely, and many others.
