Ravi Coltrane is a Grammy-nominated saxophonist, composer, and bandleader who has carved a distinctive path in modern jazz. The son of John and Alice Coltrane, he has built his reputation through thoughtful, innovative playing and fearless musical exploration.
Coltrane’s early professional experience shaped his expansive aesthetic. He played in drummer Elvin Jones’s Jazz Machine, connecting him directly to his father’s classic quartet, and joined saxophonist Steve Coleman’s M-Base collective, immersing himself in that movement’s rhythmic and harmonic innovations. Over the years, he has performed and recorded with jazz giants including McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, and Branford Marsalis.
As a leader, Coltrane has released several acclaimed albums showcasing his warm tone and searching improvisational approach. He produced his mother Alice Coltrane’s Translinear Light, honoring family tradition while pushing boundaries. He is co-owner of the record label RKM Music, through which he has produced albums for pianist Luis Perdomo, guitarist David Gilmore, and trumpeter Ralph Alessi.
Now based in Brooklyn, Coltrane maintains an active touring and recording schedule. He leads the effort to restore the John Coltrane Home in Dix Hills, Long Island, and oversees important reissues of his parents’ recordings, ensuring their musical legacy continues to reach new generations.
